On July 16, a blood donation campaign was organized at the Azerbaijan Institute of Theology under the State Committee on Affairs with Religious Associations. The initiative was undertaken by the Committee, with support from the Youth Foundation, the National NGO Forum, and the Union of Volunteer Organizations of Azerbaijan.
The event was attended by Ramin Mammadov, Chairman of the State Committee; members of the Milli Majlis Aziz Alakbarli and Jeyhun Mammadov; Gadir Khalilov, Acting Executive Director of the Youth Foundation; Emin Musavi, Director of “ASAN Radio”; Yusif Valiyev, Chairman of the Union of Volunteer Organizations of Azerbaijan; Hamid Eldeleklioghlu, Head of the Baku Representation of Turkish Airlines; members of the “Blood Donors Association” Public Union; over 30 NGOs affiliated with the National NGO Forum; as well as athletes and around 100 volunteers and members of the public.
Participants emphasized the significance of the tradition of voluntary blood donation, which is widely organized in the country during the month of Muharram. They highlighted that donating blood in memory of the martyrs of Karbala is a progressive alternative to acts of violence or self-harm observed on Ashura. This initiative is well-regarded within society and serves to ensure that Muharram ceremonies are conducted in accordance with the essence of Islam, free from superstitious elements, and reflective of the high cultural values of the Azerbaijani people.
The blood collected during the campaign, conducted by hematologists from the special medical team of the National Center of Hematology and Transfusion, will be used to treat individuals suffering from hemophilia, thalassemia, and other illnesses.
It is worth noting that blood donation campaigns are currently being held at 35 locations designated by the State Committee on Affairs with Religious Associations and the Caucasian Muslims Board, including higher education institutions, hospitals, mosques, and shrines across the country, including the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic.
